On November 24, 1997, Alan Yurko murdered a ten-week-old child. Yurko is now rotting in prison where he belongs, but he has supporters. The anti-vaccination liars have adopted him as a cause célèbre and are using his crime as a means to frighten parents out of their responsibilities to their children and the children of other people. This is not as surprising as it might seem, because people who campaign to harm children would obviously feel empathy with someone who committed the ultimate harm. I was a little more surprised to find that the International Chiropractors Association had declared the murderer to be a "Chiropractic Hero". For more information about this "innocent" man, you can see his Ohio prison record here and his Florida one here. His wife (who married him after he was convicted of the murder of her child whose birthday she can't remember) wants him out and they can always have another baby. Actually, getting him out of prison might not be necessary as the murdered child was conceived three or four months before Yurko was paroled last time after serving a few years for aggravated burglary. Perhaps he could escape, although Mrs Yurko would be hoping he was more successful next time than he was when he tried two days after he murdered baby Alan.

Last week I mentioned that the CCRG statistics page had been updated with the latest counts of the email addresses that Mr William P O'Neill of the Canadian Cancer Research Group had used, as well as lists of threats of legal action, statements that this site had closed down, and announcements of my bankruptcy. Even I was surprised at the numbers. This week I was even more surprised when I counted up the number of versions of my name that Mr O'Neill has invented. 93. Ninety-three! I definitely think that the time for t-shirts and mouse pads has arrived. See the list here.

Begging bowl (6/10/2001)
Tim Bolen is asking for money to help fight people like me who are part of "as vicious an organization as humanity has ever faced". One is left to wonder why he is so frightened of a group of people that he and his supporters outnumber 100,000 to 1. You can read about the mad court case here.

Fund Raising is one of the most important things we need to do in the "Health Freedom Movement."Since we "outnumber" the quackbusters 100,000 to 1, it really isn't that difficult to raise the money we need to to defeat them. Just think, if just 10,000 of us contributed only $10 per month each, we'd have $100,000 a month to spend across America, saving the world from Stephen Barrett, and his minions of evil.

There are only 103 days to go until nominations close for the 2002 Nobel Prizes, so cancer curers should start collecting the records for the Cancer 100 Challenge. With the success these people claim (and the fees they steal from the gullible and desperate) they should have no trouble finding just 100 people cured of cancer. So come on Hulda, Sam, Stan, Leo and the others. Let's hear the success stories. What's that you say? Too busy? Don't have the records there in Mexico? Don't need a Nobel Prize? Come on, you can do it. Can't you? Don't let us think you are all frauds.

Speaking of Nobel Prizes (20/10/2001)
Yet again the Nobel Committee has missed the chance to overthrow conventional thinking and hidebound tradition by recognising the contribution to science made by homeopaths and other proponents of quackery. Still, The Millenium Project would like to congratulate William Knowles, Ryoji Noyori and Barry Sharpless for winning the Chemistry prize even though they don't know anything about the memory of water, and Leland Hartwell, Timothy Hunt and Paul Nurse for winning the Medicine award even though they can't cure cancer. Backdown of the week (27/10/2001)
In a fit of insanity, a television network was preparing a show featuring "psychic" John Edward who was going to contact the spirits of the people who died in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11. Luckily, public opinion and ridicule in the media caused the network to rethink this absurd and offensive idea and it has now been abandoned. I would have thought that it would be reasonable to ask Edward why, if he is so psychic, he didn't foresee the public outrage at his proposal to exploit the families and friends of the people who died. But then, if he was so psychic he should have foreseen the September 11 tragedy and warned everyone, or, if his "psychic" powers only extend to talking to spirits of the dead, perhaps he could have issued a list of casualties on September 12 and eased everyone's doubts and grief.

Spam temptation (27/10/2001)
I usually flick spam email messages straight to the bit bucket, but I almost kept one this morning just because of the email address that had been forged for sending it out. It's hard not to be sympathetic to someone who uses the name "binladinsucks", but I don't need millions of email addresses to "market" to right now. Sorry.

Equal-opportunity dislike (27/10/2001)
Some people have complained that I seem to be anti-Jewish for listing some Jewish hate sites and not enough Arab sites. I added Hamas, Hezbollah and the PFLP to the list this week, so now the bombs and death threats can come from two directions at once. This reminds me – where is the Bin Laden web site? I suppose that when you live in a cave and think that fire is a new invention you would be a bit slow taking up the latest gadgetry.

There was a trial in Alice in Wonderland over the theft of some tarts, and the goings-on there reminded me that I'm still waiting to receive the paperwork (both for the case and its dismissal) related to Nuremberg 2001, that great court case in which I was accused, inter alia, of terrorism, trespass and writing letters to public servants. I have even bought a new hat.

"Collar that Dormouse", the Queen shrieked out.

Harassment hiatus (27/10/2001)
The men in white coats have rounded up the usual suspects, unplugged modems, confiscated crayons and cardboard, set truncheons to "stun" and generally restored order down at the GAL Home for the Chronically Deluded. Also, all has been quiet on the Ottawan front. In fact, the only thing looking like harassment here lately was a fax containing a white powder, but that was declared a false alarm. Can this last beyond the next full moon?
